The 2018 Chicken Barbecue ~ it's not too early to be thinking about the Chicken Barbecue.  This year's BBQ is July 26 and 27.  VOLUNTEERS for this event are NECESSARY for it to be successful!

 

The following are areas of opportunities for you to volunteer:   kitchen, servers, corn huskers or cookers, chicken cookers, runners, parking lot or ticket sales.  To have a convenient choice of the day or time you prefer, volunteering soon will  guarantee the day and time of your choosing.  DON'T DELAY! You can volunteer by calling Mike Ricketts 753-7831 or the church office/326-2643.

Stewardship....

"Summertime and the living is easy."   We are all beginning to plan vacations, reunions, picnics, cottage trips and so on...what a delightful time!  We pray for that your vacation and time with family will be safe and a source of many happy memories.  We know we'll all be dashing in and out of town, but while you make your plans, we're asking that you all take a few moments to remember your stewardship for the church.  Even when we are not in town, our church activities continue, as do the expenses. 

Please consider online giving.  It is a convenient and secure way to make a one-time or recurring donation. When you choose to give online, your donation will be directed to a secure Pay-Pal site to complete your donation. Habitat Day:  Lend-a-Hand

The Chautauqua Area Habitat for Humanity is an ecumenical Christian Ministry that welcomes to its work all people dedicated to the cause of eliminating poverty housing.

They will begin working at 127 Union Street, Westfield on June 1.   There is a job for everyone; no special skills required.  The work session are Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

 

If you would like to provide refreshments for the Habitat Volunteers please contact Mike Ricketts at 338-8864.  Refreshments are needed for Saturday mornings at 10:00 a.m.

You may have noticed on your calendar that June 14 is officially Flag Day.  Though Flag Day may not be quite as well-known or widely celebrated as the Fourth of July or other patriotic holidays, it does mark an important day in history.  It is the celebration of the birthday of the Stars and Stripes, which was adopted as the official flag of the United States on this day in 1777.  To honor the occasion, below are some of the best patriotic Flag Day quotes about our country, and the flag that has come to symbolize our nation.  After all, what better way to pay homage to our nations symbol, the American flag, than to reflect on its history with some truly inspiring statements from the country's leaders?  These quotes will have you feeling patriotic in no time -- perfect for celebrating all things red, white, and blue.  So take a few minutes out of your day to browse, and remember what we are commemorating on Flag Day.  Happy Flag Day!

Mission/Outreach News....

 

The Mission Committee will host a yard sale at the home of Marjory Fritz on the weekend of July 26 and 27 to raise funds for on-going mission causes throughout the year.  All members and friends are asked to donate one or two nice items for the sale.  If you need assistance in getting your item(s) to the church, please contact Marjory Fritz at 326-2643.  We also ask that no clothing be donated for this particular sale.  (If you have clothing you wish to donate, please consider using the St. Pauly clothing drop-off shed located at the Lakeshore Assembly of God Church on East Main Street.)  Items for the yard sale will be accepted beginning in June.  VOLUNTEERS are needed for the following times each day of the sale: 10a.m. - 12 Noon, 12 Noon  - 2 p.m., 2 p.m. - 4 p.m.   If you would like to volunteer please contact Marjory Fritz/326-4277 or the church office/326-2643.

Chosen International Medical Assistance partners with funds2org to collect your used shoes. The shoes (including sneakers, boots, sandals, etc.) will be used to create and sustain micro-enterprise opportunities for low income entrepreneurs in developing nations. They will also stay out of landfills, AND, the more shoes collected, the more money Chosen IMA receives to continue its ministries! It's a Win, Win, Win! You can drop off your shoes at the church office or drop in a box located at the Portage Street entrance. Please rubber band each pair of shoes together. Thank you!

Medical Benevolence - Haiti Nursing Student

The Mission Committee has begun a campaign to raise funds for a scholarship to support the education of a nursing student in Haiti. This program is under the auspicious of the Medical Benevolence Foundation.

 

Fundraising projects will be undertaken throughout 2019 in support of the nursing student. There are specially marked envelopes in the pews for donations or you can send your donation to the church earmarked "Haiti Nursing Student".   MISSION IS THE HEART OF THE CHURCH SO LET’S KEEP THE HEART HEALTHY!

The Pentecost Offering helps our youth begin life with a strong start -- a solid foundation of faith formed in the first third of life, from childhood through young adulthood.

Each year on Pentecost Sunday, we celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit and the birthday of the church.  The Holy Spirit remains with us still, connecting us with the church of the past, continuing to inspire the church of today, and pointing us to the church of the future.  Each year, this celebration is marked by receiving the Pentecost Offering which nurtures the faith of those who are the church to come - children, youth, and young adults.  

Psalm 71 testifies that a foundation of faith established during childhood helps ensure lifelong faith and service.  The patterns and lessons established during these formative years continue to bear fruit throughout a person's life.  By giving to the Pentecost Offering, our congregation participates in helping our children, youth, and young adults grow up to proclaim witht he Psalmist, "O God, from my youth you have taught me, and I still proclaim your wondrous deeds."  

Since the Pentecost Offering gsatrted in 1998, Presbyterians have raised more than $15 million for ministries that benefit younger members of God's family.  We believe we are called to do even more - to support and care for young people as they build a strong foundation of faith.   Won’t you join us on the Day of Pentecost, June 9, 2019? If we all do a little, it adds up to a lot.

Let us thank God for giving us the opportunity to share our gifts generously.  Envelopes will be available in the pew or you can send it to the church earmarked "Pentecost Offering".

As a church we continue to participate in TOPS Markets "Cash for Causes" program. We have purchased TOPS "Cash for Causes" gift cards that are available to church members and friends.  You pay the cash value of the card and the church earns 5% on each card sold.  We all buy groceries!  There is no additional cost to you; you simply use the gift card.  Cards are available in $50 and $100 denominations.  Please call (326-2643) or stop in the church office to purchase a gift card. Since January 2019, the profit from the gifts cards is $250.00.

 Following the call to order by Moderator Rev. Cynthia Wicker-Lundquist and devotions and prayer by Marie Edwards the Session took up the work of the church on Tuesday, May 21, 2019.

 

Actions taken at the meeting are summarized as follows:

~ Approved the 10:00 a.m. summer worship schedule to begin on Sunday, June 2, 2019 and continue through Sunday, September 1.

~ Received the Treasurer and Deacon reports.

~ Approved the transfer of investments funds from Anderson-Cuddihy to New Covenant Funds of the Presbyterian Foundation.  This will save our church a management fee currently being charged.

 

Other Business...

~ Nominating Committee to seek a Clerk of Session - the clerk does not have to be an Elder currently serving.
